There are a lot of things that make Alden a good running coach – his extensive knowledge of and passion for the sport, experience as a coach and accomplished athlete, and his attentiveness, responsiveness, encouragement, and support. But, what makes Alden a great coach, and sets him apart, is his interest in getting to know me not only as an athlete but also a human who is navigating family, professional, and other commitments while trying to chase running goals. Alden’s willingness to individualize and adapt my training plan to account for all the things outside of running is exactly the kind of coaching I need and want at this stage in my life.
- Karen, long time runner and athlete
I found running later in life and Coach Alden has been instrumental in my ability to progress year after year and tackle my running goals. Life will inevitably get in the way of training—whether it be travel, sickness, injury, or work. It’s been amazing to have a coach there to guide me through these up and down moments and keep me on track. Alden has coached me through 4 marathons, 3 half marathons, an 10k and a sprint triathlon in the last 4 years. And we will continue to work to beBTR!
- Marshall, former basketball player turned runner and triathlete
Alden Basmajian and BTR Training and Racing have been instrumental in my journey through multiple marathons, a half marathon, and a half Ironman, and now as I prepare for an Ironman. Alden's expert guidance, personalized training plans, and unwavering support have not only helped me reach my goals but also inspired me to push my limits. His commitment to excellence and deep understanding of endurance sports make him an outstanding coach and mentor.

After years of on and off cycling, I made the decision a year ago to train consistently and asked Alden to coach me. I love Alden’s workouts because they are...EFFICIENT - I’m increasing my power and endurance and still have plenty of time for family and work. VARIED - Each week feels fresh and new. PERSONALIZED - Alden takes into account how I rode each workout and is always building me up to meet the specific challenges of my next race. Thanks to Alden, I’m in the best cycling shape of my life!

I am a marathon runner. I started working with Alden as my coach in the spring of 2017 – we had previously been training partners – thinking it would be an easy transition/similar training to my previous coaching situation. It was an easy transition, however, the training is different (in a good way). We added in two swim days, I do a lot more of my runs by time instead of distance (but he mixes in both), and workouts are more varied – some on the road, some on the track, some by time, some by distance. For someone used to running 90-105 miles per week when training for a marathon, running only 50-70 miles was a huge change and involved a lot of trusting in the training and the process. In 2018 I ran four races – a marathon, a 25k, and 2 5ks. I ran a huge (5 minute) PR in the marathon and qualified to the Olympic Trials. I ran a 3 minute PR in the 25k. In the 5K I broke 18 for the first time, and then 3 weeks later took another 10 seconds off my time. So far I have gone into all my races excited to race instead of feeling burnt out. While I know that not every race will be “good” or a PR, I am looking forward to the second half of the year with some more big goals to go after.

When people ask me why I do triathlons and train so hard, my answer is always that I enjoy having a healthy lifestyle, and I love not only the process of becoming a better version of myself every day but also the personal growth and values that sport brings to my life. Alden has been a critical part of my journey, which started five years ago when I decided to do triathlons. His values, structured workouts (blocks and seasons), deep understanding that the process and growth are personal, and his support and encouragement over time inspire me and make me look forward to what the next years will bring.

I’ve been working with Alden for just over a year and a half, and I couldn’t be happier. After completing a couple short distance triathlons, I reached out to Alden and decided to train seriously for an Ironman. In less than one year, Alden not only helped me complete my first Ironman, but his training and coaching prepared me well enough to qualify for and finish in the top 50 in my age group in Kona. I’ve tried other coaches and training plans before, and I can easily say that, because of Alden, I am having the most fun training and feel the most physically fit and mentally prepared I’ve ever felt. I think it’s extremely unique to have a coach who truly gets it, wants the best for you, and helps you reach any goal you have in mind—no matter how crazy it may seem. I’m convinced that Alden is the best tri coach out there and couldn’t recommend him more to any runner or triathlete looking to challenge themselves. I feel extremely lucky to work with such an amazing coach!

Sports Backers MTT was the first marathon training program that I’ve ever done. Richmond was my first marathon and I learned so much from the MTT coaches and other runners on my team. I ran a 3:27:54 in the Richmond Marathon (November 2021) by doing Sunday long runs with the team and occasional low mileage runs during the week. I couldn’t figure out a way to fit strength training or cross training into my schedule. I was so enamored with marathons after my first one and decided to reach out to Alden Basmajian from BTR Training in September 2022 as I wanted to take my training to another level. Alden has really developed a personalized training program that works for me and my schedule. Life is busy being an attorney and boy mom, so efficiency is key. Alden is great about communication and scheduling workouts that maximize the time that I have available. He’s also amazing at pivoting workouts based on my travel schedule and/or how my body is feeling. My current marathon PR was in Chicago in October 2023 where I ran a 3:03:10. I’ve come a long way in a couple of years and that is in large part because of the personal attention I get from Alden and his personalized training program.
- Nora, marathon runner
From being a long time runner with only basic biking and elementary swim skills, Alden has coached me through my two Ironman’s, including IM Florida where I placed 2nd in my age group (10:44) to qualify for the IM World Champs.
Alden is attentive to your needs, adjusts how hard you want to be worked and adjusts for your goals as life happens (illness, work, you know). He’s also just a nice guy!
I’d very highly recommend working with Alden, whether you want to get the best out of yourself or simply stay accountable to your health and fitness goals.
And if you ask him to get the best out of yourself, be prepared to WORK.

I've been teaching for nearly 30 years, so I recognize what a master teacher looks like. You are that man. You are able to explain what you want in a way that is easy to internalize.
You got me to the Ironman World Championships. Your training got me through the Ironman World Championships!
